Focus On: NuView Academy Students Learn About 3D printing

  • NuView Academy Students  Enter Brave New World of 3D Printing

    3D Printing

NuView Academy students were fascinated when they received a chance to spend some time learning about 3D printing. Students received an opportunity to work with 3D equipment to create objects. Additionally, students learned about some of the basic functions regarding 3D printing, which Principal Bill Walsh was useful in “helping students gain a better understanding of the process."

Students learned that the creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.

Students also learned that 3D printing enables users to produce complex (functional) shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods.3D printing is the opposite of “subtractive manufacturing” which is cutting out/hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic with for instance a milling machine. 3D printing enables users to produce complex (functional) shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods.
